Slalom race in Brazil
185 years and 15 days
after Independence, the very same location hosts Brazil's finest
slalom skateboarders. Ipiranga River's right bank lanes will
be the stage for the Copa Independencia de Skate Slalom, an
all-evening event that will gather 80 skateboarders cruising around
cones on an authentic historical site next September 22nd.
The Museu do Ipiranga gardens lanes have just been repaved specially for the event, a huge courtesy from the City of São Paulo's Secretary of Sports. The local officials are really committed to make things happen around here as far as slalom skateboarding is concerned; whether still not financially, the guys have provided almost anything the organizers needed logistics-wise.
The slalom event will be the cherry of
the pie of the city's "Jornada Esportiva", a sporting day
that will take various sports contests around the city for 24
hours between Saturday and Sunday's noons. After the contest, many
music shows with popular artists of all kinds will be performed
on the spot, making it a full-day sportive celebration in the same
month and place where Brazil got its Independence from Portugal.
The course will hold 60 to 80 cones in
a hybrid course. All entry fees will be fully directed to the US$
4,000 prize money, as virtually all organizers' crew members
will be working for the cause. The race will count points for
the ISSA circuit, and at least one more contest is likely
to happen until the end of the year.
The square around Museu do Ipiranga is a well-known street spot in São Paulo for a long time, having already appeared in many magazines and videos all over the world. The choice of the location was not made at random; besides the lanes fit perfectly for slalom, there's also a coincidence in all of this. Just like Dom Pedro I made the Independence statement in September 7th, 1822, setting Brazil free from Portugal's boundaries, slalom skateboarders also wish to make a statement to all those who care out there: WE'RE COMING FAAAAAAAAST!!!
By the way - the contest's poster "borrowed" a classic painting by Pedro Americo which depicts the historical moment...
The event is being organized by Wave
Boys Skateshop and Garage Metallica custom chopper workshop.
